Thank you for visiting our "MG Walk" personal fundraising page!
Our personal story with MG began 14 years ago. Our daughter Christa, age 19, began complaining of being tired all the time, of difficulty chewing, and it seemed as if her eyes were drooping. Christa had minor health problems as a child and young teen such as anemia and TMJ and we attributed her symptoms to those, and told her to eat better, get some rest, etc.. Then came the day Christa couldn't button a button or hold up the blow dryer, and we were shocked out of our denial, and began in earnest to find the cause.
Christa's diagnosis was difficult to hear, but we knew she was a fighter. She went through so many hospitalizations and IV therapies. She had rare reactions and infected ports. Yet she kept going, getting her associates degree, having to use a backpack with rollers since she didn't have the strength to carry her books.
Christa researched every aspect of MG, always being proactive. She became convinced that a thymectomy was her best chance. She had the thymectomy 11 years ago, and has been in remission. She did have minor flare up while pregnant with her son, but thankfully went back into remission after he was born (healthy and beautiful, thank God!).
Christa still has to constantly monitor her health. She still gets some of the droopy eyes, double vision, and loses her smile sometimes if she is too tired, or stress level too high. She knows to back off on her schedule and boost her immune system. MG is never far from any of our thoughts. We never take Christa's remission for granted, and it is our hearts desire to see the day when a cure for MG is found.
We are excited to be supporting the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) through the MG Walk. The MGFA is the only national volunteer health agency in the United States dedicated solely to the fight against myasthenia gravis.
MGFA is committed to finding a cure for myasthenia gravis and closely related disorders, improving treatment options, and providing information and support to people with myasthenia gravis through research, education, community programs, and advocacy.
